2020 Junior Fair Board

Application Deadline: CLOSED
Interviews: Tentatively scheduled for Monday May 20

Applications are now being accepted for membership for the 2020-2021 California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta Junior Fair Board, a group of outstanding Imperial County youth who serve as Ambassadors for the annual fair.  Applicants need not be members of 4-H or FFA. You must currently be a sophomore in an Imperial County high school, with a grade point average of 3.0 or better, and willing to make the activities of the Junior Fair Board your top priority up to and during the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta.

It is a great way to meet kids from other schools and a wonderful way to serve your community. Junior Fair Board members have a lot of fun, but they work hard.  The following is a brief outline of the duties and responsibilities of a Junior Fair Board member. It is important for both you and your parents to know in advance what is expected of you and the time that will be required.

A Junior Fair Board member begins work in the fall with monthly meetings and appearances in local parades, including Cattle Call Parade in Brawley, El Centro Christmas Parade, and the Holtville Carrot Parade. In January we meet two times and in February meetings are weekly until the opening of the Fair. Meetings are on Mondays, begin at 7:00 pm and last 1-1½ hours.

Work begins in earnest the week before the fair starts.  Members can anticipate missing school Thursday afternoon and Friday for animal weigh-ins and more preparation.  All day Saturday and Sunday you will be expected to work in the show rings. If you can’t be around animals, this is not a job for you! If you have an animal at the fair, we will work around your show times, however if you have multiple animals it may be challenging for you to commit to being a JFB member so please take this into consideration when applying. The following week, starting on Monday, the JFB hosts High School Madness which has become one of the largest annual events at the fair. Members will also assist with School Tours and Special Peoples’ Day (Wednesday and Thursday) during the day. In the afternoons we meet and then sponsor activities such as Round Robin every night of the week until 9:00 pm or 10:00 pm. This is a very busy and tiring week and can be difficult to keep up with your studies even the best students’ grades can suffer.  You are expected to participate in everything, so bear this in mind when you apply.

Junior Fair Board uniforms are provided for members. If chosen as a JFB member, as an representative of the Fair, your role as a JFB member will require you to often be in the public eye. Which may include being photographed or appearing in promotional fair materials with social media.

Junior Fair Board members and their parents will be required to review and sign a Code of Conduct that will outline the expectations of Junior Fair Board members.  Behavior deemed unacceptable by the Senior Fair Board or Junior Fair Board Advisers may be cause for dismissal.

Interviews will be held in April or May; date(s) to be determined. If you have been selected to be interviewed you will be notified by telephone as to your exact interview time so remember to give us the correct contact information. If you have a cell phone listed as your contact number, please make sure you have your voicemail setup so a message can be left.

Please fill out the online application by clicking on the button below. Your digital signature and the digital signature of a parent/guardian is required on the online form.  This will verify that you and your parents understand what is expected of you if you are selected to serve a two-year term on the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta Junior Fair Board. We look forward to meeting you and good luck.
